Hanford Nash Van Ness "KE7BB" June 11, 1927 - April 19, 2017

Hanford Nash Van Ness

Markham NET & Markham Neighborhood will say... "thank you, goodbye & we'll miss you" to long-time Markham Neighborhood resident and Markham NET HAM operator, Hanford Nash VanNess. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Jackson Bottom Wildlife Preserve (south of Hillsboro) on May 7th.

Mr. Van Ness was a long-time resident of Portland, Oregon; formerly of Bremerton, Washington and Washington DC. He was wartime shipyard welder, US Marine, OSU alumni and physicist and beloved husband of Janet Bell Van Ness. Mr. Van Ness graduated from Benson High School at age 16 then started working as a shipyard welder. He obtained his college degree in physics then worked at the US Bureau of Standards (then NRL) and BPA. After 25 years, he retired at the Navel Research Laboratory working with communications and torpedo development. Mr. Van Ness loved golf, HAM radio, contract bridge, world travel and classical music. One day, he started work on a Destroyer, was extracted by a breeches buoy and taken by helicopter to an aircraft carrier from which he was catapulted in a Navy jet to return to the mainland.

In 1989, Mr. Van Ness (KE7BB) met Janet (WB7FJC) while working on a ham radio public service event. They married February 2, 2013 and made their home in southwest Portland. The massive HAM radio tower was a local landmark.

Janet and Van took cruises to many places, including Europe, Russia and the Mediterranean. They also toured China and made several trips to the Panema Canal, Mexico and Hawaii. Mr. Van Ness was always making new friends wherever he went with the twinkle in his eye, quick wit and sometimes wicket sense of humor that drew people to him.

Van's loss is deeply felt by his birth family and the Bell, Bryan and Solberg-Bell families. He was a loyal friend, devoted husband, affectionate step-father and grand-father. His sharp intellect and loving heart will be greatly missed.

Celebration of Life will be held at the Jackson Bottom Wildlife Preserve (south of Hillsboro) on May 7th, 2017. Remembrances to the Unitarian Church and Social Justice Committee.
